Valley of Fire State Campground (get pics posted later)

This campground was in Nevada.  You went through gray-brown mountains and desert and then hit  a valley that was fire red!

In the campground we were surrounded by red rock that had been shaped by the wind and the sand that was in the wind.  Quite impressive! We stayed here for 2 days.

Running across the road were desert tarantulas-very creepy.

Valley of the Fire had many short hikes (1-2 miles) and we did many of them.  One of them had a slot canyon and one canyon had petroglyphs throughout it.  That canyon was my favorite.  This park was in the desert so the hikes were in sand which is a lot different than what we were used to hiking in.

On one of the hikes there were 3 stone cabins that the CCC built back in the 30's.  A woman was sitting on the edge of a cliff playing a mandolin.  It was so serene and haunting
.
We HAD to hike to a bridge that was made for a movie in which Captain Kirk was killed by a Soran.  It was from Star Trek the Next Generation.  Don't now why we HAD to do this hike as neither David or I are Star Trek fans.  But we got the pics!  LOL!

This park connected to Lake Mead BUT it was closed due to the govt shutdown.

Speaking of the shutdown, we have seen thousands of tourists from other countries that have come to the US to visit the National Parks- can't imagine how much revenue that the parks and surrounding businesses have lost.
